Fortificações da Foz do Tejo

Nowadays along the northern bank of the River Tagus, near its mouth, there can be seen hundred-year-old military structures, strategically placed, overlooking the water-line, like sentry-boxes watching the course of the water or some other boats passing by.What concerns the decision of having them built in those places, certainly some questions do rise:

– Will they have been built in the same period of time? Why? By whom?
– As their sizes differ, do they try to show a hierarchy in its function or a need of military activity? And how did they work?
– In the course of their long life will all elements of the construction have remained until now?
– Finally, what will happen to these buildings of today and when its only military function ceases?

In this presentation, resulting from a Master’s research we aim to answer these questions, with support documentation from various epochs (essentially cartographic and photographic ones), evidencing a strategic defense plan of the Port of Lisbon, aiming at the organization of a vast territory.
