Focusing on a specific period in the history of Brazil (1500 - 1654), the chapter discusses the portuguese defensive traditions and the dutch defensive traditions, and their meeting during the Dutch occupation in northeastern Brazil. The author also talks about the political and economic context of the South Atlantic in that period.
