FORTE SÃO JOAQUIM: DO MARCO DA OCUPAÇÃO PORTUGUESA DO VALE DO RIO BRANCO ÀS BATALHAS DA MEMÓRIA – SÉCULO XVIII AO XX.

This paper deals with the role of Forte São Joaquim in the consolidation of the border and the occupation of the White River Valley, located in the current state of Roraima. Seeks to understand the process of occupation of the region in the late eighteenth and nineteenth century, describing the Portuguese colonial and Brazilian imperial policy. Discuss issues related to the Forte São Joaquim memory, seeking to give greater emphasis to the subjects participating in this process.

Besides the discussion of the dispute over the Forte São Joaquim memory issue involving various segments of society Roraima, memory that was allocated by the so-called "pioneer" families, in which some of them have their origins linked to former members of the fortification, and use to justify their possessions and consolidate their social place.
