UMA ARQUEOLOGIA DAS CASAS FORTES: ORGANIZAÇAO MILITAR, TERRITÓRIO E GUERRA NA CAPITANIA DO RIO GRANDE – SÉCULO XVII

This research is in prospect to fill gaps in the archaeological studies on the Rio Grande do Norte, mainly on the need to promote further the field of archeology, in this case the historical archeology or archeology of modern societies. What does it mean, then, to promote the rapprochement of the archeology of the other humanities and social sciences, regarding the analysis of the social setting that is behind the material traces left by a certain human groups. The “casas fortes”, while a component part of the colonial project of power and military action was the object of study in this thesis by the interest in studying the colonial presence in the area and depending on the material remains available. This research therefore sought to identify, classify, describe and analyze the “casas fortes” in the context of the captaincy of the State of Brazil, since the second half of the seventeenth century to the beginning of the eighteenth. The presence of buildings equipped to serve as a residence, space and defense of territorial possession in manorial marking has its origins in the Iberian of the late Middle Age and extend, with their own adaptations, the various Portuguese colonial spaces, including Brazil.

The “casas fortes”, even with the specifics of its presence in Rio Grande do Norte colonial, were part of a long process that was the colonial territoriality mechanism and the design of military action in confronting the ethnic groups resistant to colonization, the indigenous groups that were the interior, the Indians Tapuias. The research methodology was guided into three perspectives in empirical data collection, which began with a literature review and documentary, and followed later with the reading of the ethnographic and historical cartography, and finally, to the collection, classification and interpreting the material remains in archaeological sites themselves. Besides drawing up a framework of definitions of structures built in the seventeenth century, was analyzed the variability and mobility of the definition and significance of “casas fortes” and their specificities in the context of Brazil and Rio Grande do Norte and general characteristics of colonial and off the two examples of archaeological analysis.
