O cubo artilheiro da barbacã do Castelo de Freixo de Espada à Cinta no contexto da arquitetura de transição da raia transmontana em finais do século XV

Since the summer of 2014 there have been archaeological excavations in the vicinity of the castle of Freixo de Espada à Cinta, to verify if there are other remains of the ancient medieval castle besides the only remaining tower, the “Torre do Galo”. The data will be used in the area’s project of requalification, already approved by the competent authorities. During the campaign of 2015 it was identified a circular tower that belongs to the first line of walls (“barbacã”), with features that date to the late 15th century. This structure underlines the importance that the frontier of Trás os Montes had to the Portuguese kings of the late Middle Ages and, above all, the status of the castle of Freixo de Espada à Cinta in the defence of this frontier.
