O ensino das Matemáticas nos Colégios Jesuítas de Portugal e a sua passagem ao Ensino da Fortificação

The role of the Aula da Esfera of Colégio de Santo Antão of Lisboa, with the teaching of Mathematics and other military sciences was essential for the training of military architecture, and broadly speaking, the Lessons on Scientific Teaching in Portugal. The Society combined a strict military and militant spirit and the College of Lisbon would also associate to it the principles of study, scientific research and development, reason why the main Portuguese military engineers of the 17th and 18th centuries studied there. In 1641, for instance, the teachers of the Aula themselves were called as fortifiers in the early years after the acclamation of D. João, although with uninteresting results at the time: Father Simão Fallonio passed away shortly after and Father Cosmander passed over to the other side of the conflict. The supranational situation of the Society and the strict sense of hierarchy of its members advised against a requisition of that type. However, one still needs to look for the official link of the teaching of the Aula da Esfera with, for instance, the class formalized in 1647, called “Aula da Matemática” or Aula de Fortificação e Arquitetura Militar, which could function at Ribeira das Naus.
